During the 209th session, held from June 29 to July 10, the Executive Board of UNESCO endorsed the nomination of the Djerdap Geopark and it joined the Global Geoparks Network and the European Geoparks Network.
The first geopark in Serbia covers an area of 1330 km2, including the area of the Djerdap National Park and other protected areas of national and local importance. It spreads over the parts of the territory of four municipalities: Golubac, Majdanpek, Kladovo and Negotin. Djerdap UNESCO Global Geopark is characterized by an exceptional geological, as well as other natural, cultural and historical heritage.
The activities in the geopark are focused on informing the general public about the numerous natural and cultural values of the Djerdap area, as well as on the development of tourism with the aim of improving the social status of the local population, encouraging the sustainable economic development and improving the protection of natural and cultural heritage.
Djerdap UNESCO Global Geopark is a member of the Global Geoparks Network, which consists of 161 geoparks from 44 countries, as well as of the European Geoparks Network, which includes 81 geoparks from 26 European countries.
